Conflict of Interest in Critical Insurance-Giant Mergers.
Governor Malloy- Do Not Go Back to Days of "Corrupticut"!
The International Business Times published a blockbuster story on the proposed sale of Cigna to the Anthem Corporation, which would create the largest health insurance corporation in history. The story describes the egregious conflicts of interest that our Insurance Commissioner has in participating in any aspect of the review process, including having recently served as a lobbyist for Cigna, her husband still working at Cigna, and her arranging for regular phone calls with the companies to discuss progress in other states. On top of that, the story outlines how these companies have been giving money to political committees related to Governor Malloy in a manner that reminds us of the dark days of John Rowland.
If this isn't bad enough, the Insurance Commissioner just announced that she had chosen not to hold a hearing or any public process on the Aetna/Humana merger six months before. Her refusal to use any of her leverage to protect Connecticut jobs and consumers in this proposed deal, combined with her unethical behavior on the proposed Cigna deal, says to us that she is still working for the insurance companies in stacking the deck against the rest of us.

D.U.E. (Democracy, Unity, Equality) Justice Rally
Despite an icy snow storm, nearly a thousand people showed up at the April 4th D.U.E. Justice March for Fairness. They lifted their voices against the idea that we should accept any economy that takes from the many and gives to the few. Nor should we allow racial, gender and ethnic injustice to exist in the state. Good people filled the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. There, they heard powerful testimonials about issues that matter to the 99-percent: good jobs at fair wages; quality public education for all; a fully funded public sector; and a level, open democracy. The event was a tremendous way to honor the 48th anniversary of Dr. King's devastating assassination. While we should never forget that great racial strides have been made during the intervening years, the difference between the economic elite and the 99 percent has rocketed upwards. Democracy works for everyone, or it is not democracy. Speakers committed to hold state legislators accountable. They publicly vowed to return on May 11th with a full scorecard. How well have legislators lived up to the D.U.E. Justice principles? The night ended with a call to action. After lobbying legislators inside the LOB, everyone marched to Hartford City Hall to demonstrate against the anti-worker legislation proposed by Hartford's new Mayor. City Council defeated the Mayor's resolution, 8 to 1! It was powerful night for Democracy, Unity and Equality. Congratulations to everyone who joined this event, by presence or spirit. A CCAG Strategic Training Event: Justice Works Convening
On Saturday, January 30, Connecticut Citizen Action Group brought 75 activists together to grapple with two related issues that affect everyone: runaway economic inequality and persistent racism. The two are closely related. Both produce haves and have nots separated by enormous distance. Both undermine a modern, healthy economy. Both run counter to the “greatest good for the greatest number,” a principle that made the US economy second to none.
“This was an excellent event! I learned so much about the huge impact that concentrated power and wealth have on everything related to our economy, our communities, and our future. The power and reach of the financial sector in the state and in the country has to be challenged and called to account.”
