Baby's Toxic Bottle

Most plastic baby bottles are made with Bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is the building block of polycarbonate plastic. When these bottles are heated and/or exposed to detergents/scrubbing the ester bonds degrade and bisphenol A leaches from the bottles into liquid.

Scientific studies show bisphenol A can wreak havoc on the endocrine system, which regulates important hormones. The chemical is associated with adverse health effects including prostate and breast cancer, immune system dysfunction, early puberty in females, and higher rates of miscarriage.

Why is this newsworthy, or what's new about this?

  • Some of the bottles used in the study were purchased in CT
  • This is the first time two countries have teamed up to study BPA in popular baby bottles. The findings are similar- bottles purchased in both Canadian and US markets leached BPA when heated.
  • This is the first time that so many public health and science based groups have come together to call for an immediate halt to the sales and manufacture of bisphenol A containing bottles
  • There's a Congressional investigation into bisphenol A leaching from can linings into infant formula.
  • More and more states are taking matters into their own hands to protect their citizens.
