PROTEST CONGRESSMAN CHRIS SHAYS’ DECLARATION THAT HE WILL VOTE AGAINST THE HOUSE BUDGET
& UPHOLD PRESIDENT BUSH’s THREATENED VETO
WHEN: Thursday, July 12 – 12 Noon
WHERE: Chris Shay’s Bridgeport office -- 10 Middle Street – Bridgeport 06604
The House bill that sets spending levels for programs in the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS) and Education will be debated on the floor of the House on July 17.
After six years of neglecting domestic priorities, the Congress is making new investments in programs that serve ordinary Americans. The Emergency Campaign for America’s Priorities (ECAP) www.actnow.com has been fighting to restore funding cuts to health care, education, nutrition, child care, job training, Head Start and the cost of college since 2005.
However, the President has threatened to veto this domestic spending bill even as his Administration continues to spend billions on the war in Iraq. The President and GOP congressional leaders are pressuring House members to oppose this important bill. It is critical that House members, especially moderates, hear from constituents about the need to fund critical domestic services.
Chris shays voted against America’s and Connecticut’s priorities ever since President Bush has been in office. Last year, cowardly Republican leaders including Shays didn’t even finish the job, never passing a 2007 budget. Shays is one of 147 Republican House members who have signed on to a letter sponsored by the Republican Study Committee declaring that they will vote against funding critical domestic services, and that they will uphold President Bush’s threatened veto.
It’s the same old Shays smoke and mirrors – he’s claims he is independent minded but he votes with Bush over 80 percent of the time. It’s time to remind Chris Shays who he represents – the people of the 4th Congressional District, not the Republican Study Committee.
There will be a press conference and a delegation visiting Chris Shay’s office telling him to invest in America’s priorities; we will also rally and hand out leaflets urging people to call Chris Shays and tell him to invest in America’s priorities.

Urge Chris Shays to vote for the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill. Tell him to invest in the vital services on which ordinary Americans rely. Tell Chris Shays that it is time to invest in America's priorities.
This link will take you to the pledge, but it doesn’t list all 147 members who signed on. Shays is one of the signatories.
Here’s a link to a statement (.pdf) issued by Rob Portman, Director of the Office of Management and Budget. In this statement (.pdf), he supports vetoing any spending bill that goes above the President’s requests.
